Well, with peak season upon us there is no shortage of activities and foreign languages being heard
around town. As someone who loves meeting people from all walks of life, I could not be happier.
As our town ambassador, I get all of the tough questions and have not heard one for which I don’t
have an answer. Here are a few that have been thrown my way recently.
Dear Corrie,
I heard you are like me – one of those people who refuses to sleep between sunrise and
sunset. I took a trip to Denali a few years ago, and I came down with a pretty bad case of sleep
deprivation that caused me to mistake my husband for an Alaskan brown bear. I’m thinking of
celebrating the summer solstice in Cody, but I don’t want to jeopardize my marriage (again) by not
getting enough shuteye. Will it be safe to visit?
– Sleepless in Ottumwa
Dear Sleepless,
As long as you don’t mind rolling out of bed at 5:30 a.m. and waiting until shortly after 10 p.m. to
shut off the lights, you’ll be fine. Our longest days of the year last about 15½ hours. Come join me on
my annual quest to make as much hay as possible while the sun is shining. You should still have
enough time to hibernate for the night with your grizzly.
Dear Corrie,
About those foreign languages, what’s the most difficult for you to recognize?
– Amateur Linguist
Dear Am,
There was this guy from Brooklyn…
Dear Corrie,
I am worried because I heard you have a stampede that lasts five days in early July, right about when my family is planning to visit. Is this like Blazing Saddles where cows are milling around inside the bars, or is it more like City Slickers where Billy Crystal spooked the cattle with his battery-operated coffee grinder?
– Big City Bob
Dear Big City,
You gotta stop watching so many movies, dude. Or at least realize these aren’t documentaries. Our
99 th Cody Stampede is a rodeo that takes place June 30-July 4 this year, and I promise you we will not
be trampling tourists on Sheridan Avenue. The stampede features the Cody/Yellowstone Xtreme Bulls
event, four Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA)-sanctioned Stampede Rodeos; a Kiddies
Parade July 2; Stampede Parades July 3 and 4; a 5K/10K run/walk July 4; and the three-day Wild
West Extravaganza Craft Fair July 2 – 4. There are also musical performances by regional acts in
outdoor venues throughout town.
Dear Corrie,
Speaking of movies, would you prefer Paul Newman or Robert Redford when they made
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?
– Decisions, Decisions
Dear Decisions,
Um.
And with that, I am off to spend my week lovin’ life – and weighing the pros and cons of two certain
movie stars – in Cody, Wyo.
